WORKSHOP OVERVIEWS
Choosing the Right College for you
Our first college counseling session will focus on the importance of the college selection processes. The session will contain a personality/ideal fit test, small-group discussions, and critical thinking exercises meant to help students gain a better understanding of their interests and aspirations. We will then discuss the best methods to evaluate college and universities as a potential fit. The goal of this session is to help students to understand that choosing a college or university is about much more than rankings and that the college search must be focused on identifying what the student is seeking in their college experience.
How to Stand Out in the College Application
In this session, we turn our attention to the importance of extracurricular activities in a strong college application. For students in still in 9th or 10th grade, we will discuss the various ways that shifting focus from school-centered activities to unique entrepreneurial pursuits outside of the classroom can help their application stand out. We will brainstorm opportunities for this sort of work and will offer tips, inspiration, and planning advice to help students get on the right track. We will discuss the importance of the activity list and help students to think critically about how they will approach the activity list now and how they would like to improve their extra-curricular involvement to strengthen the list in the future.
Everything Students Need to Know About Applying to U.S. Colleges
This session will discuss the ins and outs of the entire college application process. We will look at the various components of the Common Application, discuss the role of test scores, determine when which tests should be taken, evaluate the early decision/early action process, discuss when and who to ask for letters of recommendation, as well as review the process for requesting alumni or on-campus interviews. We will provide appropriate timelines for students to review and follow through the process to ensure that the application process is efficient and stress free. By the end of this morning workshop, students will have a clear understanding of the steps necessary to complete their college applications in an efficiently and timely manner.
Personal Statement Workshop
We will spend the afternoon brainstorming personal statement topics. The session will begin with a discussion of the purpose of the personal statement, and will go into tips and best practices for crafting a unique and effective personal statement. By the end of the session, students should have a list of possible topics and an understanding of how to make themselves stand out in the application process through an engaging and compelling writing style.
Recap: Getting In
Our final session will be spent recapping the college tour. Each of the schools we visited on the tour are unique, each with their various selling points. In order to be a successful applicant, students must be able to show schools that they understand what makes that school stand out. We will work together to thoroughly revisit each of the schools that we toured and outline each of the schools selling points so that potential applicants are fully equipped with the tools necessary to ace any 'why' essay they are asked to write.
